ECDL Modules

ECDL began in 1998 and now has at least 1.5 million members all over the United Kingdom alone.

It is recognized worldwide as a qualification which allows people to show their skills and competence in handling computers.

The Seven ECDL Modules

It consists of seven modules which should all be passed in order for an ECDL certificate to be awarded.

The seven modules included in ECDL Modules are:

ECDL Module 1- Basic Concepts of Information Technology
The first of the ECDL modules, ECDL level 1 requires the test taker to have an understanding of the general make-up and various parts of a computer. The test taker is also required to be knowledgeable on IT basic concepts.

ECDL Module 2 – Using the Computer and Managing Files
ECDL level 2 requires the examinee to show knowledge in operating the general functions and the operating system of a computer. This module addresses file management and folder organization. The examinee must show ability to duplicate, search, delete or move files and manipulate desktop icons.

ECDL Module 3 – Word Processing
In ECDL level 3, an examinee is expected to show effective use of word processing application. Accomplishment of basic operations is also expected. Tasks like creating tables, using images in documents, importing objects, etc. must be accomplished as well.

ECDL Module 4 – Spreadsheets
This requires the examinee to have a basic knowledge on the general ideas of a spreadsheet and the use of spreadsheet application. The examinee must know how to do standard mathematical operations with the use of standard formulas and operating functions. He should also be competent to use the latest features of spreadsheet applications from importing objects to doing graphs as well as charts.

ECDL Module 5 – Databases/Filing Systems
It enables the examinee to understand general ideas of databases and to show skills in database operation on a computer. This 5th module consists of two sections- the 1st part is concerned with the examinee’s ability to plan and create simple database with the use of a usual database package; while the 2nd part is concerned with the examinee’s ability to fetch information from a current database with the use of the query and select functions available. He should also know how to make and alter any report.

ECDL Module 6 – Presentation
Competence in utilizing personal computer presentation tools are expected to be shown by an examinee here. General tasks like formatting, creating, and preparation of presentation for various audience and situations must be accomplished. He must possess know-how in graphic and chart operations as well as the different slide show styles and presentations.

ECDL Module 7 – Information and Communication

ECDL Modules – A Final Note

This is also divided into 2 parts. The 1st section which is all about Information, the examinee must demonstrate know-how on general web search jobs with the use of a browser and other available search tools. He must be able to bookmark these results and print search pages and web reports. The 2nd section which is communication, asks the examinee to be able to use the e-mail software, showing how to send them and receive them, how to attach files to messages and to manage and organize files and folders within the e-mail software.
